Stunning original verdite bust sculpture of African woman wearing her braided hair up and a necklace. The sculpture is very heavy, weighing approx. 40 - pounds. Beautiful hand carved verdite stone. Amazing detail with intricate carvings resulting in real life effect. Hand inscribed signature on bottom shoulder that reads, "CASHEL K." C,1970's - 1980's.
Verdite is a semi-precious stone, formed over 3 million years ago and found in deposits in the fertile plains of Zimbabwe. This bust shows fine carving in the braiding of the hair and around the weaves of the necklace.
The Shona people of Zimbabwe have been sculpting this stone into works of art for nearly a millennia. These sculptures historically portray the men and women of the clans that live on the African plateaus.
