What is laminate furniture?
Laminate furniture is constructed of laminate, a hard, synthetic material that is composed primarily of melamine resin. Unlike laminate flooring, which is often designed to look like wood, high-end vintage laminate furniture tends to be solid in color. Some common exceptions include laminate furniture that is designed to mimic travertine, which is a look that was especially popular in the 1980s. Laminate furniture first took hold in the late 1970s as designers like Karl Springer, intrigued by its versatility, began experimenting with it. As the Postmodern style surged, laminate was coveted for its ability to be manipulated into rounded shapes, such as waterfall edges. Some of the most common examples of laminate furniture from that era include blocky side tables and coffee tables as well as tiered nightstands and bookshelves with waterfall edges. Among the most common laminate colors from the era are pink, black, and white.
