Manager and producer roles aside, it’s fair to say Tish Cyrus knows a thing or two about decorating. The stylish matriarch of the celebrity Cyrus family oversees the careers of daughters Miley (yes, that would be Miley Cyrus) and Noah, but design happens to be her side hustle of choice. For the family’s home in Nashville, what was originally a 1940s structure with a relatively modest footprint became a 3,000-square-foot abode. The updated design had enough bedrooms to accommodate the entire family (she’s a mother of five), plus a reimagined barn that was featured in an episode of Cyrus vs. Cyrus: Design and Conquer, the Bravo decorating show Tish starred in alongside daughter Brandi. As for her design aesthetic, “I love clean lines, but it has to feel warm, homey and welcoming,” she says. “As a family we love to come together, so I never want it to feel stuffy where someone feels like they can’t kick their feet up. That’s the Nashville gal in me.” Step inside the stunning space and see the pieces you need to steal this rockin’ look.
Personalizing a Place
Tish’s design mantra comes down to the importance of a personal touch, which is best reflected in her approach to artwork throughout the house. Each wall or shelf seems to have something that’s channeling that unique Cyrus sensibility. “I want to make sure the living spaces always feel personalized and reflect whoever lives there,” she says. “No matter what items you purchase or swap, you always need to have things, like photos, to represent that individual.” Bathroom shelves host framed family snaps alongside meaningful mementos, while leaning on the living room mantel are photographs of John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix, both gifted to Tish by Billy Ray. Nowhere is Tish’s mantra more apparent than in the spunky design of Miley’s annexed barn.
How to Go High-Low
Tish’s savvy approach to mixing pricier pieces with bargain finds reflects the flexibility that a mother of five knows is key to designing a family-friendly space. “I always feel your high-end pieces should be your staples–the things you want to have forever,” Tish says. “The lower end would be a mix of accessories, throws and pillows you can change out regularly. It’s easy to update the feel of a room with those items.” In each of the bedrooms, Tish went with mostly white bedding, but used pillows to punch up (not to mention personalize) each space. For kids’ spaces, not boxing yourself into a design corner is doubly as important. “I always consider how quickly kids grow and change so the space should be easily adaptable,” Tish says.
Having Vintage in the Mix
“Sometimes, I will find a vintage piece that is so special it will inspire me to decorate an entire room around it,” says Tish, revealing just how deep her love for vintage runs. With a mid-century chair here, and a vintage lamp there, she deftly accentuates new pieces with those she’s hunted at a flea market or, we’re happy to report, on Chairish. “I love that each piece feels like it tells its own story,” she says of her vintage finds. “I can’t help but wonder where the piece lived prior – which room was it in? Where did they find it? Who was the owner? Why did they part with it?” Given the creative thread that runs through the careers of the entire Cyrus clan, it seems only fitting that their home be filled with pieces that have a unique story to tell.
