Finishing off a paper while lying in bed might be a common reality for yourself or your teen, but there’s serious merit to creating a dedicated study space. Whether you’re building a study space for yourself or a whole troupe of kids, here are a few tricks that can help make your space as conducive to productivity as possible!

4 Tips for Building a Study Space

Find the Right Spot

The key to a good study sesh is setting up a quiet space. Pick a spot that’s not as heavily trafficked as a living or dining room, for example. While bedrooms can make for a great place to hunker down, a nearby bed can be a true temptation. A little natural light can also go a long way in helping to maintain focus during those long cram sessions.

Pick Your Fittings

Employ ergonomic furniture for maximum comfort during studying. Comfortable office chairs with plenty of back support will minimize bad posture and promote productivity. It’s also vital to pick a desk that’s high enough to accommodate your chair. Desks with deeper widths allow more space for study supplies. Plus, it gives you more space between your eyes and a laptop, reducing eye strain.

Let There Be Light

No one likes studying in a poorly lit space. Utilize a reading or desk lamp for that perfectly-focused illumination. Harsh lighting can also exacerbate eye strain, so aim for lamps with a warm, soft glow, or natural light, if available.

Stay Organized

A clutter-free study space translates to a clutter-free mind. Keep your study space tidy by making use of shelves and storage options like binder holders or letter holders. (Hot tip: use an old toast rack for a little vintage verve.) If you need more storage for items like pocket dictionaries, calculators, and notebooks, opt for a desk with drawers or employ boxes and organizers. Hang a bulletin board or wall calendar to ensure that you stick to your study schedule!
