Today, the terms “Afghan” and “blanket” are often used interchangeably to refer to a heavy to lightweight textile used for warmth. That said, there are a few subtle differences, including their origins.

Traditionally, Afghans were a type of blanket crafted by the people of Afghanistan. Crafted of a multitude of different materials like wool, acrylic yarn, or cotton, these blankets are known for their colorful knit or crocheted patterns. These blankets date back to the 1830s, but became especially popular in the American zeitgeist in the 1970s.

In contrast to an Afghan, which is a specific style of blanket crafted in a particular region, “blanket” is a more general term used to describe any large piece of fabric intended to provide coverage and warmth. Produced all over the world, blankets come in a wide range of styles, materials, and designs. Popular blanket styles today include chunky knit, faux fur, and cashmere blankets.
