“I can’t bear to think about anything of quality going to a landfill. Every time a client moves, I encourage them to sell or donate pieces that can’t be reused, and I will reupholster a well-made sofa three or four times.”

The Chairish 2022 Home Furnishings Resale Report
Foreword
I’m excited to unveil the Chairish 2022 Home Furnishings Resale Report, our second annual deep dive into the state of recommerce in the home industry.
The past two and a half years have dramatically changed the way people shop for furnishings: where they’re shopping, what they’re buying, and how they’re buying it.
While the pandemic accelerated engagement in the home category, supply chain delays and increasing prices due to rising material, labor, and transportation costs have frustrated customers and threaten to dampen their interest in the category.
In this context, vintage has emerged as a compelling and increasingly mainstream alternative.
Vintage items aren't subject to rising prices or material and production delays; they already exist, so they are ready to be shipped or are available for quick local pickup.
The one-of-a-kind nature of vintage pieces counters the big box blandness of widely available newly made goods.
The environmental benefits of recommerce are undeniable, as this report will show. With over 661,660 items sold since we started the company, Chairish continues to be an essential part of the circular economy and the leader in our field.
On behalf of our community of vintage buyers and sellers—small business owners and design lovers alike—we encourage you to always consider vintage first. It's the sustainable, stylish, and practical way to shop.

The Roaring Resale Market
Sales In The U.S. Home Furnishings Category Massively Accelerated In 2021
Spending grew 2x faster than the year prior.
Following A Blockbuster 2021, Continued Growth Is Expected For The U.S. Home Furnishings Market
Total U.S. home furnishings spend is expected to reach $477B by 2027.2
Inclusive of All Categories, The U.S. resale market is expected to reach $289B by 2027
Where Is Resale Growing the Fastest? At Home
While books, fashion, and electronics have traditionally been the most popular resale categories, Americans have now embraced and greatly increased their spending on pre-owned home furnishings, due in part to the long lead times, supply chain challenges, and rising costs affecting newly made furniture.
Since 2015, U.S. home furnishings spending has increased by 34.7%; in contrast, resale U.S. home furnishings grew an impressive 62.6% over the same period.2
Resale Home Furnishings Will Grow 29% And Reach $22B By 2027
In the next five years, the home furnishings resale segment will be 29% larger than it was at the height of the explosive growth of 2021. In fact, this growth rate will be 3x as fast as traditional retail.
Within All Resale Categories, Ecommerce Is The Fastest Growing Channel
So Long, Stigma: 97% of Shoppers Say There Is None
The resale market shows no signs of slowing down, with even more growth expected this year. Past concerns about buying secondhand have mostly evaporated, with 97% of shoppers saying there is no stigma associated with buying resale furniture.1 No longer a niche hobby, shopping vintage has become mainstream.
Resale Home Furnishings Are Now Mainstream
Americans have become increasingly comfortable buying resale furniture, ranking it second only to books & media in terms of their comfort purchasing secondhand.
As Income Increases, So Does A Shopper's Affinity For Resale
Those seeking luxury goods likely turn to resale because they are looking for items that are truly unique and cannot be replicated elsewhere.
Europe Leads The Way
Europeans have already developed an affinity for shopping secondhand over the years. In fact, over 40% have bought secondhand in the last year, and 47% say they’re fully comfortable buying resale home furniture.1
What’s Driving Resale Home Furnishings’ Explosive Growth?
COVID-19 severely disrupted global supply chains, so shoppers have turned to resale over new items for four key reasons:
chapter 2
Economic Forces at Play
The Furniture Supply Chain Snarl
For many years, the furniture industry has had a “long lead-time” challenge. Newly made items could routinely take up to 8-12 weeks to arrive. The impact of COVID combined with unprecedented conditions exacerbated the lead-time problem exponentially.
The furniture supply chain worldwide suffered major disruptions due to:
- Factory closures
- Material shortages
- Transportation limitations
- Rising material, labor, and transportation costs
- Extreme weather conditions
While lead times in the furniture industry are getting ever longer, consumers’ expectations for speedy delivery are also increasing, due to overnight shipping experiences in other categories.
Ready-to-Ship is a Resale Advantage
The Nation Faces Inflation at a Four-Decade High
8.2% In 2022, consumer price inflation is expected to reach an average high of
Inflation is Hitting the Home Furnishings Industry Hard
Prices for all household furnishings jumped 10.2% year over year according to the consumer price index.1
Within the furniture and bedding category, newly made living room, kitchen, and dining room furniture in particular have seen prices swell, with an unadjusted increase of 15.4% from June 2021 to June 2022.1
Resale is an Antidote to Inflation
Though prices for home goods have increased at a significantly faster rate than inflation, vintage items aren’t subject to the same economic forces. The asking/ listing prices of Chairish goods have remained relatively flat.
Percent Difference in Consumer Furnishings Prices
Resale Attracts More Shoppers as Inflation and Financial Woes Mount
Nearly 25% of consumers cited rising prices as a reason for buying more secondhand home products. 67% agree that buying secondhand is a good way to save money.1
Feeling the Squeeze: Buying Resale Is the Smart Choice
Buying vintage home furnishings is more popular than ever as changing market forces and the appetite for resale grows. In addition to offering the one-of-a-kind, sustainable style that shoppers crave, vintage items are a solution to the obstacles plaguing newly manufactured goods, including inflation and supply chain pressures.
In short, buying vintage just makes sense.
The Vintage Value Proposition: A Case Study
In an economically uncertain environment, resale is a financially responsible choice. For instance, purchasing a set of vintage dining chairs rather than new ones is more cost effective, environmentally friendly, and—of course—stylish.
In today’s uncertain economy, the benefits of vintage are strikingly clear. Not only are vintage goods the more stylish and eco-conscious choice, but they are the antidote to the inflationary price increases and supply chain delays frustrating shoppers. Vintage isn’t just a novel choice anymore; it’s the new and smart standard.Anna Brockway, CHAIRISH Co-Founder and President
chapter 3
Resale’s Environmental Advantage
How Vintage Supports the Circular Economy
The circular economy is powered by the four R's—the reusing, refurbishing, repairing, and reselling of products—which keep items out of landfills and extend the lives of existing pieces. The resale model reduces the need to create new products—with all their negative environmental impacts, from production waste to transportation.
Today, only 8.6% of the global economy is circular, and more than 90% of the resources used and consumed are not reused.5
The circular economy can reduce global carbon gas emissions from elements like steel, plastic, and aluminum production by 40%, or 3.7 billion tons, by 2050. The circular economy offers an opportunity to tackle hard-to-abate emissions and accelerate the transition towards a net-zero carbon economy.7
Chairish is a proud part of the sustainable circular economy. As consumer interest in the environmental benefits of resale continues to grow, and science and data continue to underscore vintage's environmental benefits, we will keep doing our part to keep beloved items in circulation.
Chairish puts the brakes on fast furniture.
661,660+ vintage, antique, and pre-owned items have been “rehomed” worldwide by Chairish Inc. since 2013.
Consumers Give Sustainability the Green Light
Globally, shoppers have come to value the environmental benefits of resale. Sustainability is not a secondary perk of recommerce, but a core reason for its massive mainstream appeal.
Every Age Group Values Sustainability
Sustainability isn’t just a passion for younger shoppers—members of every generation cite it as a key factor in resale shopping.
54% of consumers agree that shopping secondhand is good for the environment.1
Resale Is Ready to Ship Now
Availability is a built-in benefit of pre-owned furniture, since vintage items by definition already exist and are ready to ship. Pre-owned items aren’t vulnerable to production delays and can be delivered via a point-to-point distribution model, reducing shipping times and transportation expenses and minimizing the environmental impact of delivery.
The option to purchase and pick up vintage products locally is also an important driver for consumers; not only does this offer convenience and fast fulfillment, but it also means purchases have a lower carbon footprint.1
Fast Furniture Spells Disaster for the Planet
In 2021, Chairish offset 341 metric tons of carbon emissions. That's like recycling nearly 15,000 bags of waste or planting 5,672 trees.11

So What’s Next
(Designer) Survey Says: Viva La Vintage!
Chairish survey results indicate a transformational shift in the buying habits of interior designers toward vintage home furnishings. In an increasingly planet-conscious world, the fast furniture fad may be fizzling among design lovers.
Designers report that by using vintage, they can deliver their clients a one-of-a-kind look that isn’t replicable and do so on time and on budget.
When asked why they shop vintage over newly made:
Resale Resonates with Designers Nationwide
“Buying vintage is one of the most sustainable things you can do. Reuse is key: Not only are you keeping things out of landfills, but you are lowering the demand for new items to be produced.”
“I hope that fast furniture—like fast fashion—doesn’t exist in the future. Furniture shouldn’t be considered to be disposable. Appreciation for our environment needs to play a bigger role in design.”
“Repurposing just makes sense! The carbon footprint of a new furnishing grows year after year and, if you’re creative and resourceful, something vintage will make an even bigger impact.”
“I always start with vintage in my designs and build from there. Buying pieces from the past that can never be re-created and are unique is special, and coincidentally, sustainable.”
