Pre-refrigeration, confit jars extended the life of perishable items either buried in the ground or as storage containers. This terracotta example, made in France in the 19th century, has an emerald-green glazed exterior of striated pigment that wraps around the two handles. Chips, cracks, and loss to the glaze as expected for the age and type of use. These wonderfully formed vessels make beautiful decorative items to fill a bookcase or can be used to hold fresh or dried floral arrangements. They also make wonderful holders for kitchen utensils.
