This magnificent French trophy, dated around 1940, represents a petanque player standing out for its careful Art Deco aesthetics. Who wears the traditional Lyonnais-style pants with cuffs on the pants. The figure is made of calamine with a delicate patina in bronze tones, mounted on a rectangular breche marble base in brown and white colors. Good condition, comes from a distinguished French private collection.
Pétanque, or pétanque in French, is a sport originating in Provence, whose objective is to throw metal balls as close as possible to a target called a "cat", from a static position. Although the current version of pétanque was formalized in 1907, its origins date back to a primitive form played with stone balls, brought to Provence by Roman soldiers and sailors. This trophy, with its stylized representation of the sport, not only celebrates the history of petanque, but also the artistic richness of the Art Deco era in France.
