Edward S. Curtis photographed and documented over eighty tribes west of the Mississippi, from the Mexican border to Alaska starting in 1904. He was financially supported in this endeavour by J. P. Morgan until his death in 1916. It was to have taken seven years but its completion didn’t happen until 1930. The work, entitled The North American Indian, consisted of 20 portfolios and 20 volumes. The volumes (image size 5” x 7”) were in bound editions and portfolio prints (image size 12” x 16”) were contained as loose prints in each portfolio. Curtis printed on 3 different papers, but the vast majority were on Dutch Van Gelder paper (as this print is) and which shows as a watermark when held to a light.

The portfolios, containing the larger prints such as this one, each contained 36 hand-pressed photogravures from copper plates. Ultimately, only approximately 220 of the originally proposed 500 sets were finished and published. It is believed that 85-90% of all the sets are in the hands of university libraries and not available commercially. This means that at any particular time only about about 20-30 individual photogravure prints are actually in private hands and potentially available to buyers. less
