This is a medium size saucer bubble lamp, designed by George Nelson, produced by Modernica during the time they held production rights.
Designed in 1952, the Nelson™ Bubble Lamps® were originally produced by Herman Miller®, and have become a design so iconic, they are part of the permanent collection of the MoMA in New York.
"Modernica acquired the equipment used to make Bubble lamps through a bankruptcy sale, and set out to revive the abandoned product line. Modernica manufactured the Bubble lamps starting in 1999, and continued as sole producer for 15 years. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted them trademarks including the use of the "George Nelson" and "Nelson" marks for lighting in 2010 and 2011." -LATimes
The George Nelson Foundation won the lawsuit against Modernica at which point Modernica could no longer produce them.
Made with a spray-coated plastic originally developed for the military to 'moth-ball' naval ships, the Nelson Saucer Bubble Pendant features a steel frame that is slightly visible through the shade, much like the Japanese rice-paper lamp. The lamp is trimmed, top and bottom, with brushed nickel, and includes a brushed nickel ceiling plate.
One owner, includes, and ships in, original box.
