Wool rugs and Polypropylene rugs can often be mistaken for the same material; however, they have some key differences that make them better suited for different needs, areas of the home, and lifestyle factors.

Wool rugs are known for their durability and softness. They are made from sheep fleece and are frequently hand-woven or hand-tufted. Wool is a highly resilient and naturally stain-resistant material, which makes it an excellent choice for high-traffic areas like living rooms or hallways. Additionally, wool rugs have the unique ability to regulate temperature, warming your home in the winter and cooling it in the summer. One downside of wool rugs is that they can be more expensive than other types of rugs. They also require regular upkeep and maintenance to keep them looking their best.

Unlike wool rugs which are made of natural materials, Polypropylene rugs are made from synthetic fibers, engineered to mimic the look and feel of wool or silk. This, coupled with the fact that they’re generally machine-made, means Polypropylene rugs are generally less expensive than wool rugs. Like wool, Polypropylene is known for its durability and stain resistance. However, Polypropylene exceeds wool in the maintenance category. These rugs generally don’t need much maintenance, making them a popular choice for households with children or pets. All of this said they may not be as soft or luxurious as wool rugs. Another downside is that, due to the synthetic materials used in their production, they can occasionally give off a chemical odor.
