Why Everyone Loves Jean Stoffer’s New Collection

Jean Stoffer

The host of The Established Home and the designer we all adore, Jean Stoffer has been busy since opening her namesake shop, Stoffer Home, in 2018. Located in her home state of Michigan, the shop serves as a source of inspiration for her own abode, a 1905 historic house known as The Madison. Lately, she’s been developing new upholstery with Cloth & Company—complete with ruffles, fringe, and the prettiest patterns. Read on to see how she uses the new collection in her home (and shop it at Cloth & Company on Chairish).

Tell us about your collection, now available on Chairish. What do you want us to know about your products and your line? What was the inspiration?

The inspiration came because of needs we had while designing our custom projects. The pieces in the collection fill many gaps we noticed in the marketplace. There are smaller scaled pieces that fit into normal size rooms.  This was very helpful for us as designers. Additionally, we wanted to have a nice assortment of fabrics for each of these pieces. We picked beautiful velvets and linens for our solids and then worked with Cloth and Company to develop prints that worked in concert with the solids. We have a great stripe (the Jane stripe) and a pretty block print flower (Francie). But I think the most unique and interesting print we developed is The Michigan Bird Toile. It Is beautiful and understated in its elegance.

What is one design tip you have for people as to how to style your products?

The collection has several ottomans that are all uniquely shaped and styled and are all a size that can be used in so many places. I find myself using many of them in our custom projects and in my own home because they are so versatile. I use a pair as end-of-bed stools, I use them as pull-up spots to sit near a sofa, a make-up desk stool, a spot to sit in a walk-in closet; I could go on!

Your own home is a reflection of your focus on restoration, a love of history, and bringing people together. How do you use these pieces in your home and how did the way you live inspire them?

It’s true, I do love all these things! I just love the beds in the collection, and I am so happy to put the Marisa Bed in Velvet in our guest room. It is used very often!  In that same room, I put in two Marie Swivel Chairs in the Michigan Bird Toile print (the bullion fringe along the skirt edge is the frosting on top!) and a June Gathered Skirt Ottoman in the Jane Stripe printed fabric. I just love the whole mix of things, and it makes our guests feel so comfortable. I also gave our living room a glow-up by adding two Gail Chairs by our chess table. They add such a great modern element to the otherwise very traditional corner.

Tell us about your approach to vintage and antique finds… how does that come into play when it comes to layering patterns, colors and styles? How do you like to incorporate vintage/antiques?

I love to incorporate vintage finds that are of a different era from the home we doing design work in. For example, in a modern home, antiques from before the mid-century look amazing.

I think it’s the juxtaposition of clean modern architectural lines and minimal pattern with the texture and ornamentation of older antiques. Conversely, in a pre-war home, I love antiques that have more modern lines, like from the mid-century. I must admit though, a good old mirror of any vintage looks good almost everywhere!
