How do you clean a chandelier?
First and foremost, make sure the power is off to avoid any electrical accidents! Lay down a soft drop cloth underneath the chandelier in case any crystals or glass falls to. Not only will this prevent breaking, but it will also shield any delicate furniture below. Plan to clean the chandelier in small sections to make sure you’re getting every inch. If you’re planning on taking the crystals off to clean them individually, make sure to take a picture beforehand so you’re not left guessing where each piece belongs.
When choosing a cleaning solution, make sure to check its compatibility with the finish of your chandelier. (Note: Ammonia-based cleaners can take off gold or silver finishes.) Some common DIY options are one part isopropyl alcohol to four parts distilled water, or hot water with mild soap. Spray a small amount on a lint-free cloth or glove (pro tip: avoid using paper towels as they will scratch the crystals!) and wipe the crystals and the base, drying immediately after with a clean, dry cloth. Don’t forget to clean or replace the bulbs as well. As you work around the chandelier, make sure you’re not twisting or rotating it.
If your chandelier is hung too high and is hard to reach, or if you just don’t trust yourself with the delicate process, it’s always a good idea to bring in a professional.
