The top of a wardrobe is often called a “shelf” or “top shelf.” Wardrobes — also known as armoires — usually come equipped with one or more top shelves that can be used to store soft goods such as extra blankets, pillows, or other items that do not need to be hung up. (Using your wardrobe as a traditional closet? Load up that top shelf with baskets to stow everything from socks to clutches and crossbodies.) Some wardrobes may also come outfitted with drawers or other built-in storage compartments. The top of the wardrobe is typically higher than the hanging rod, and may have a railing or other barrier to prevent items from tumbling off.
