What is the difference between wicker and rattan?

The difference between wicker and rattan is that rattan is a naturally occurring material (derived from a plant), while wicker is a woven material that is made from raw rattan. Rattan is actually a species of vine, native to tropical regions in Australia, Asia, and Africa. Once the skin is peeled away, it exposes a pliable reed which can be used to construct woven materials such as wicker. Wicker is most traditionally used for baskets, but it is also commonly used in furniture, lighting, and decor. Wicker does not have to be woven exclusively of rattan. It can also be constructed of materials like bamboo, cane, or synthetic resin wicker, which is also sometimes called all-weather wicker or HDPE wicker. Classic wicker constructed of rattan is a durable material, but not generally recommended for outdoor use. Outdoor furniture constructed of rattan wicker should be brought indoors during the winter, protected from harsh sun, and regularly cleaned to preserve longevity.
