What is the difference between an ottoman and a coffee table?
The difference between an ottoman and a coffee table is that a coffee table is a table, usually crafted of a solid material such as wood or stone, while an ottoman is technically a “seat” that is usually upholstered. Despite their differences, ottomans and coffee tables are often used interchangeably, placed in front of a sofa to function as a place to rest drinks, books, remotes, or board games. While coffee tables are usually the preferred choice to fill this role, designers and homeowners are increasingly turning to ottomans to take on the task. In addition to being less of an investment, ottomans tend to be more lightweight than coffee tables, making them easy to move when entertaining. They can also be easily transformed into seating if need be. Lastly, because ottomans are upholstered and bear no hard edges, they can be a huge asset in homes with small children.
