What is the difference between a sectional and a sofa?
The main difference between a sectional and a sofa is that a sofa is meant to seat three to four people, while a sectional can seat far more, often landing in the range of four to eight or more people. As a rule, sofas are composed of a linear bench-seat construction (although it is common for that bench to be curvaceous), while sectional often have an L-bench formation. That said, sectionals are not limited to only the L-shape. Sectionals can also be serpentine, semi-circle-shaped, or U-shaped, among many other possible iterations. Because sofas tend to evoke more formality than sectionals, sofas are often selected for living rooms, while sectional are more popular choices for dens or family rooms.
