What is the difference between a daybed and a futon?

While both daybeds and futons serve the purpose: a flexible seating option that can turn into a sleeping area if needed, they look very different.  A futon is a thin mattress that sits on a specialized futon frame. The frame is unique in that it can be folded down into a bed or up into a sofa. A daybed is a twin-size bed featuring panels or rails on three sides to create a bed with a couch silhouette. Whereas a futon has a specifically-tailored mattress, a daybed simply uses a traditional twin mattress. Futons generally look more like a traditional sofa than a daybed. While futons can comfortably sleep two people, most daybeds can only sleep one. However, many daybeds come with a trundle bed feature tucked underneath to maximize their sleeping capacity.  Futons tend to possess a more casual vibe than daybeds, making them ideal for spaces where function is key. Daybeds, with their upright back and sides, are bit more refined, making them a choice pick for flex spaces that it’s imperative don’t look like flex spaces.
