What is a powder room?
A powder room, also known as a half bath, is a bathroom containing a sink and toilet, but no shower or bath. These abbreviated bathrooms are generally found on the ground floor or main living quarters of a home, as they are typically intended for guest usage. Because of their small size, powder rooms are generally considered to be one of the best places in the home to take a design risk. Many designers opt to cloak powder rooms in wild wallpapers, eccentric tilework, bold artwork, and more. From a fixture standpoint, pedestal sinks or console sinks are common additions to powder rooms. Sconces and framed mirrors are also popular fixtures. The term “powder room” originated in the 18th century as a term used to describe small closet-sized rooms that were designated for powdering one’s wig. The phrase hung around long after the true powder room had become extinct, evolving into a PC term for the guest bath.
