What is a Parsons chair?

A Parsons chair is a chair that is features arms and legs that are flush with the chair’s back and seat. Looks-wise, the Parsons chair is an extremely squared-off looking, modernist seat. Parsons chairs generally come in two styles: Parsons side chairs that are intended for use at a dining table, and Parsons club chairs that are intended for use in a living room. Parsons side chairs generally have no arms and therefore could be categorized as slipper chairs. Their backs are flush with the seat and their four legs form perfect 90-degree angles with the bottom of the seat. Parsons Club chairs feature a much more ample silhouette than Parsons side chairs. They also come equipped with arms that extend to form the legs of the chair, essentially creating open-sided “squares” that the chair seat and back rest in. The Parsons chair was originally developed in the 1930s at the Parsons School of Design in Paris, France.
