A loveseat is a small, two-seater sofa best suited to small spaces such as apartments or studios. Measuring between 52 inches and 71 inches long, the loveseat can take on any style, but generally, it is a fully upholstered piece featuring two sections of cushions (as opposed to sofa’s three or more sections). Loveseats were originally developed in the 17th century as an extended chair, designed to provide comfortable seating for women with voluminous hoop skirts. As womens’ skirts began to reduce in size, the loveseat was reinvented as an intimate seating option for two (hence the couple-centric name). In the Victorian era, the loveseat earned a reputation as the ideal seat for socializing and took off in popularity. In contemporary interiors, loveseats are an abbreviated alternative to larger sofas. In studio apartments, loveseats can be cozied up to the foot of a bed, or easily slipped into a closet with doors removed to create a functional recessed nook out of thin air.
