What is a demilune table?

Co-opting the French word for “half moon,” the demilune table is an accent table featuring an elegant, rounded front and a flat back. A demilune’s flat back allows it to sit flush against a wall, making it a striking substitution for a standard console table or credenza. Traditionally, demilunes come outfitted with three or four tapered legs, which provide enough support for the table to stand without requiring being bolted into the wall, but some employ more elaborate sculptural bases. Some demilunes may also come equipped with a small drawer, but due to their slim silhouette, many forgo any storage space. The French traditionally used demilunes to add ballast to small entryways, favoring its graceful curvature over a typical console table’s sharp edges. Today, demilunes can still be used in lieu of a console, whether that be in an entryway, between two chairs, or even as a nightstand.
