What is a credenza?
A credenza is a case piece designed to provide storage in common spaces like living rooms, entryways, or dining rooms. They are relatively interchangeable with “sideboards” and “buffets.” Similar to a dresser, a credenza features a narrow width, an expansive length, and a low overall height.
Generally, credenzas are low profile enough that they can be used as a TV stand or a media console. Other uses for credenzas include using one as a dining room sideboard, office cabinet, or playroom storage piece. The main distinction between a dresser and a credenza is that a credenza generally has interior shelving enclosed by doors and does not have drawers. Credenzas come in an array of styles, but it is especially common to find them in 20th Century styles, including Hollywood Regency, Mid-Century Modern, and Danish Modern. Asian credenzas and contemporary credenzas are other prevalent styles. Their relatively simple construction makes credenzas a good vehicle for elaborate, high-end materials like brass, lacquer, or exotic woods.
