What Is A Canape Plate?

classic American inspired tablescape with blue tablecloth, blue ironstone plates, red Murano glass, and imari canapes plates

A canapé plate is a serving piece that is used to serve canapés. What’s a canapé you ask? A canapé is a type of appetizer, generally consisting of a baguette slice or a water cracker topped with a spread (think: crème fraîche and trout roe — or caviar, for the true sybarites in the house). These delicious tidbits are typically arranged on the canapés plate in an eye-pleasing fashion, and the plate is offered up to guests as a way of providing a variety of small, bite-sized snacks. Canapé plates frequently make appearances at cocktail parties and other types of social gatherings — weddings, gallery openings, even the humble holiday work party — where food is served. They are a convenient way to give guests something to nibble on while awaiting a more complete meal.
