For this traditional 1929 Spanish Colonial-style home, Thomas Callaway Associates blended old with new, restoring intricate original elements of the building and creating new entertaining spaces. The designs pay homage to the history of the space by mixing antiques with custom furniture, gorgeous upholstery, and rich fabrics.
The robust but graceful plaster work of the billiard room came to life when painting it a custom blue-green, accented with stenciled borders, a rosette, and contrasting curtain columns of Kravet red linen. A room-length banquette in Quadrille’s Cadet Stripe fabric with red bolsters and a large Moroccan lantern fixture contribute to the riad flavor of the space.

The delightful entry to this 1929 Spanish Colonial-style home is made all the more inviting with potted dwarf orange trees, red carnations, and colorful Spanish tiles leading to a massive carved wooden front door.

The scored plastered walls of the expansive foyer were faux painted to appear as golden limestone blocks, with the existing checkered marble flooring and vertical stained glass windows leading up the staircase toward a gold leafed and stenciled ceiling, which was repaired back to its original splendor.

A ceiling detail—a sunburst or scalloped shell design—above the oval turret that begins the staircase, which is accompanied by small, wavelike flourishes of ironwork handrails.

The living room is divided into two seating groups of custom furniture including back-to-back sofas. With glazed walls in a buttery tone, rich fabrics were chosen to resemble remnants of Old World textiles. The front sofa is upholstered in Kravet’s Bolgheri with the red square pillows in “Folk Manor House” by Scalamandre and an antiqued pillow by Y & B Bolour. The stenciled beams and corbels are original to the house.

A second seating group near the living room fireplace is composed of two sofas, a large turn-legged ottoman, and a high-backed armchair. The rolled arm sofa is upholstered in Villa Venezia’s Saffron Novelty, and the Knoll-style sofa is covered in Zoffany, Chelsea Quays, Olive. Both pieces were designed by Thomas Callaway Bench Works. The ottoman is upholstered in Schumacher’s Lorenzo silk velvet.

The study is situated off the foyer, opposite the living room. It is painted a custom Pompeian Red with the ceiling painted a contrasting pale blue, embellished with a gilded stencil of Callaway design on the coved border. The French bar cabinet and the leather club chairs are vintage, and the paintings throughout are from the owner’s collection.

Through an arched opening, the dining room walls are glazed a blushed peach tone under another original stenciled and gilded ceiling. The woodwork is painted a faux grained walnut. The Country Trestle table by Emanuel Morez and the Barcelona dining chairs by Panache Designs are covered in a Kravet fabric.

Beneath a stenciled groin arched ceiling, the breakfast room holds a custom walnut table and a set of chairs in a Schumacher fabric. The small breakfront, once mahogany from the 1920’s, has been painted a blue-green hue to set off the California pottery inside.

In the family room, a stamped and gilded leather folding screen keeps focus behind a custom Thomas Callaway Bench Works sofa in a flame stitch textile.

The rear exterior courtyard is enlivened by a seating niche with a pair of stucco banquettes covered with indoor/outdoor cushions and pillows behind a small Moroccan-style fountain with colorful tiles.

A rear elevation of the house has a covered balcony looking down at the courtyard below, where an outdoor table and chairs await alfresco dining under a festive string of lights.

The intense colors of the billiard room were pulled from the vivid cement tile flooring. A striped wainscoting was painted in deep umber, giving added dimension to the blue painted walls and vibrant banquette.

The guest bedroom and dressing room were given a Moroccan flavor with walls painted in Benjamin Moore’s Wyeth Blue, nail-studded bedside tables by Horchow, a headboard covered in Hanover, and large bed pillows in Balerno, both by Pindler.

The master bedroom is a restful spot painted Hint of Mint by Benjamin Moore. The custom-designed headboard is upholstered in a Cowtan and Tout damask, and the sparkling chandelier and crystal sconces are vintage. Thomas Callaway designed the roll armed bench at the foot of the bed. The frame is gold leafed and upholstered in Sheila Coomes’ Nomad velvet.

This is the sitting room, off the master bedroom. The walls have been covered in Classic Cloth’s Limoges, and the curtains are in Enchantment by Waverly. The small painted writing desk is vintage Italian.

The master bath has a spa-like serenity, featuring a water tonality on the walls, white marble flooring with mosaic borders, a crystal chandelier, and Venetian mirrors. It is spare but light filled, giving it a clean, relaxing freshness.
