Looking for a pattern that doesn’t feel passé? Patterned upholstery, wallpapers, and floor coverings are acclaimed for enlivening interiors — so long as they don’t feel démodé. To avoid any pattern pitfalls, our curators have cued up a list of five patterns they’re deeming fabulously fresh-feeling. From nostalgic florals to extroverted marble prints, these are the perfect patterns to grace your space in 2022 and beyond!
Nostalgic Florals
Nostalgic florals, aka: grandma florals, are in bloom this year. A perennial affection of many top designers, floral-flocked fabrics tend to be colorful and showcase appealing movement. Floral patterns also vary greatly in scale, making it easy to find a size that suits your project, be it drapes, pillows, or sofa upholstery. While matching floral seating and drapes might be a hallmark of Revolutionary-era decorating, a profusion of florals can feel remarkably au courant at this day in age — just reference the patterns at play in the Brockschmidt & Coleman room above!
Flemish & French Tapestries
How do you verdue? Verdue tapestries, also known as garden tapestries, rose to fame in 16th Century Europe. Rendered in saturated shades of blue and green, these tapestries typically featured elaborate wooded landscape scenes. Today, these leaf-laden graphics are being superimposed onto wallpaper, upholstered furniture, and more, resulting in enchanted-feeling statement pieces. Backed by a surplus of white (think: white walls, white bedding) these pieces become dramatic mood-makers.
Ferns
Usher in the lush life with feathery ferns. Palm frond prints have been trending for a number of years, but now ferns are unfurling into a popularity all their own. A touch more delicate than palm frond prints, ferns feel simultaneously wooded and tropical. Use fern leaf pillows to brighten up a white slipcovered sofa, or as upholstered cushions on a stacked bamboo or faux bamboo Brighton chair.
Greek Key
If you’re not as besotted by botanicals as geometrics, consider the Greek Key pattern. A repeat pattern that’s often expressed as a decorative border, Greek Key patterns are perfect for lending polish to any pillow, bedding textile, or upholstery skirt. While Greek Key prints rendered in bold, classic color combos like black and white or navy and white have been popular in previous years, Greek Key designs portrayed in pastels feel particularly fresh for 2022. The overarching orderliness of the pattern tempers the sweetness of the pastels, resulting in an arresting dichotomy.
Marble
Create a marvel-worthy moment with a lively marble pattern. Though many people think of marble as being the domain of kitchens and polished floors, the style has cleverly found its way into textiles as of late. Perhaps most alluring about the print is the unexpectedly psychedelic effect it can take on when applied to sculptural forms like Postmodern chairs.
