The Look: Chic Farmhouse

Transport your guests to the French countryside by setting the table with mismatched bits of antique china and vintage silver flatware. The mashup of patterns creates a look that’s very laid-back European aristocrat. Charmingly etched vintage crystal is perfect for a more formal affair, and simple tumblers, or even mason jars, work for a casual lunch. Try contrasting the details of the tableware by serving up a dish or two on a wood cutting board.

The Look: Playfully Polished

Channel the season’s blooms with a table that makes a major nod to color. To keep the vibe chic rather than chaotic, choose just two colors to focus on, then riff on those throughout your scheme. If you’re not sure what hues to choose, think about which spring flowers you’d want to work into your centerpiece, then go with a couple of those colors. Patterned tablecloths can easily change the look of your solid plates from one party to the next.

The Look: Casual Sophisticate

What’s not to love about subtly luxe lettuce ware? Originally created in the 1960s by Dodie Thayer, and beloved by the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and C.Z. Guest, the undulating silhouette of these plates looks lovely layered on top of a round placemat or charger. Simple linens ensure the feel isn’t overly fussy, and indulging in a bit of animalia in the form of an objet or tureen brings in a bit of whimsy.
