We’re back with a new guest tastemaker for some quick-fire questions and a mini-curation of some fab Chairish finds!
This week we are joined by designer, Sarah Vaile. Now based in Chicago, Sarah got her start back east. After attending Parsons School of Design, she began her career under the tutelage of interiors maven and Chairish Design Insider, Celerie Kemble, and went on to open Sarah Vaile Design in 2008. Fast forward to present day: Sarah leads her all-female firm in crafting stunning spaces with a modern take on classic aesthetics. Rich patterns and bold hues seamlessly pair with timeless furniture and finishes and the design world is taking note. Sarah Vaile Design was named the “One to Watch” by the Merchandise Mart in 2014 and “Transitional Designer of the Year” in 2015 by Modern Luxury magazine. Lucky for us, Sarah shared the lowdown on her favorite vintage treasure, where she’s traveling next, and how she made someone cry (happy tears – we promise)!

My grandmother was an exquisite painter and recently gifted me a painting she did back in the 60’s of an exotic colonial scene. It has inspired my love for island tribal art that now seems to be taking over every room of our house!
Where’s next on your travel bucket list?
Big Sur, California. My husband and I are making a quick getaway of it. Cabin on stilts and all.
Most memorable career moment you’ve had so far?
I’ll never forget the time we had a client cry tears of joy when we first walked her through her new home.
What’s a current trend you hope doesn’t exist in 100 years?
“I’ll get nice furniture when my kids grow up.” I want to go back to a time where everyone collected heirloom pieces throughout their lives to eventually pass down to their children. Reupholstery is the name of the game!
