What made you passionate about interior design? How did you get your start?
My journey to interior design began while attending school at the College of Charleston, where I discovered my love for design and historic preservation. After a decade in consulting in Chicago, I returned to Tampa Bay and, alongside my sister, restored a historic home in St. Petersburg. The experience of preserving the integrity of the home’s original design, understanding the neighborhood’s history, and connecting with the area’s cultural roots reignited my passion for design and historic preservation. This passion led me to pursue a degree at Parsons School of Design and ultimately to found Connelly & Co. Studio, where I blend my love of travel, design, culture, and history to create thoughtful, personalized spaces that truly reflect the richness of the lives lived there.

What do you find most compelling about Chairish?
What I find most compelling about Chairish is the incredible variety of one-of-a-kind items sourced from around the world. It’s like a treasure trove of unique pieces that you won’t find anywhere else, allowing me to incorporate truly distinctive elements into my designs. I love how you can discover everything from vintage furniture to quirky decor, all while supporting a more sustainable approach to design by giving these items a new life. It’s the perfect platform for adding that unexpected, global touch to any space.
How does sustainability factor into your design choices and love of vintage?
Sustainability plays a big role in my design choices, and it’s one of the reasons I have a deep love for vintage pieces. Incorporating vintage or reclaimed items not only adds unique, one-of-a-kind character to a space, but it’s also an eco-friendly choice that reduces the demand for new resources. I love to repurpose these items with new fabric or a fresh coat of lacquer paint to give them a new life, blending them with contemporary pieces. It’s a win-win that results in a space that’s truly distinctive and sustainable.

Favorite way to create a statement-making moment in a room?
My favorite way to create a statement-making moment in a room is by introducing an unexpected piece that catches the eye, like a bold, funky decor item against a traditional backdrop. This approach was largely inspired by my travels. Observing different aesthetics and noticing what my eye was naturally drawn to—those design moments that stayed with me long after the trip was over—have helped shape the way I design spaces. Whether it’s a quirky light fixture or an eclectic piece of art, I love adding a touch of surprise that still harmonizes with the overall design. It’s all about balancing the unexpected with the classic to craft a space that’s both intriguing and cohesive.

Do you have any go-to color palettes and color combos?
I love starting with a base of calming earth tones like blues and greens, which set a serene and grounding foundation for any room. I think this comes from my Florida roots—I really love to incorporate the warmth of nature in my designs. From there, I like to mix in unexpected pops of color to create interest and personality. Think deep navy with a splash of mustard yellow or a soft sage green paired with a bold coral. It’s all about finding that balance between the soothing and the surprising to make a space feel vibrant yet cohesive.

What advice do you have for first-time clients to make their space truly personal?
My advice for first-time clients is to incorporate pieces that make them happy and that tell their unique story, especially those gathered from travels or cherished moments. Infusing your space with items that have personal significance—like a piece of art from a favorite destination or a family heirloom—adds depth and character. Blending these personal elements with the right mix of funky decor and traditional pieces creates a space that’s not just stylish, but truly your own.
