Inside a Texture-Rich Home in Pelham, New York

Blush wallpapered dining room with matching white side tables and a traditional dining set

For an open-minded client in Pelham, New York, designer Joan Enger of J. Patryce Design created a soft-hued, textured environment that flowed with the stately atmosphere of the neighborhood. Before enlisting Enger, the client had tried her hand at updating her space, and had renovated the bathrooms and replaced the wood flooring, heating system, doors, and moldings. Decorating the home, however, overwhelmed her more than renovating it, and when a mutual acquaintance introduced her to Enger, they immediately hit it off.

Enger carefully outfitted the home with luxurious wallcoverings and a wealth of chic, personalized furnishings that suited the client’s needs. “The majority of the furnishings and rugs were custom, which allowed us to get really creative,” the designer says. A blush-colored wallcovering from Kneedler|Fauchère helps create a warm, beautiful atmosphere in the dining room. Custom mirrors bring geometric shapes to the space, as does the orb lighting fixture from Bourgeis Boheme. Rogers & Goffigon fabric frames the views through the window.

  • The sleek, lacquered consoles are custom; a pair of Christen Maxwell stools add a metallic shimmer that complements the lacquer of the console tables.

  • Decorated in a subtly striped fabric from Rogers & Goffigon, a custom chaise lounge serves as the perfect space for lounging, as a tent lamp from Visual Comfort provides light for reading and other quiet activities.

  • The family room is layered throughout with expressive textures and soft, warm neutrals. Two custom sofas, upholstered in a chenille fabric from Schumacher, create plenty of seating space for the clients and their guests, especially with the addition of custom club chairs in Holly Hunt fabric. A custom bronze and cerused oak cocktail table sits in the middle of the space. Window shades from Jim Thompson Fabrics offer a pop of pattern; underneath the window, a raffia console from Made Goods in off-white brings another unexpected texture to the design. The mantle surround, built-ins, and wool-and-silk area rug are custom.

  • Enger and her team custom-designed all the millwork in the home, including the practical built-ins shown here in the mudroom.

  • Enger designed the sunroom to maximize natural light, and to feel bright and comfortable. Nearly all the furnishings in the space are custom, from the lounge chair in Holly Hunt fabric and the wool flat weave area rug to the hexagonal lacquered linen coffee tables.

  • Adding a subtle pattern to the space, the Cisco Brothers daybed is outfitted in a Holland & Sherry fabric.

  • A Wolf-Gordon wallcovering sets a textured backdrop for the calming master bedroom. The bed itself is custom, upholstered with a Holly Hunt fabric, and the bedding is from Signoria Firenze. Over the bed, a dark, vintage sunburst mirror creates contrast against the light colors of the space. Two lamps from Visual Comfort are positioned on top of the custom nightstands.
