Bright bedroom with white blankets and bench with cream rug

As we yearn for the seasonal switch, we’re taking on a new year’s resolution of the furniture sorts — the ultimate furniture detox. Because when you get rid of the stuff that leaves you feeling well, less than enthused, you make room for new, more you furniture. After all, your home is a reflection of you, so you want to make sure that all the pieces sum up to your vision and aesthetic.

But before you get started with the purge, let’s talk basics. There are so many options just on how to get rid of something. (To sell, donate, or toss — ugh, overwhelming much?) This is where some guidance can be of aid and even help you make extra dough for the stuff you really want. So, we’re here to be your furniture detox coach. (You’re welcome). Excellent or great condition

Do a little inspection and make sure it’s in excellent condition to sell. There are a few exceptions, like if it’s industrial, a brand name, an antique, or mid-century piece, but in general you want to make sure that the item is in great, usable condition.

Hot on the market

Is it a designer piece? Is the style of it new and in-season? Does it have a popular pattern on it? Do a little online research on sites like Chairish, Pinterest or home decor blogs for similar items. You may be surprised by what’s hot on the market, which ranges from repurposed furniture to ceramic owl-shaped planters! You never know — that suitcase of grandma’s antiques might be a treasure trove of vintage finds.

It’ll bring in the dough!

If it looks to have potential and it’s worth your two minutes to photograph, list, and ship it, definitely sell it online! To calculate how much money you’ll probably make, see how much a similar item recently sold for on Chairish.

WHEN TO DONATE

Good condition

As a general rule, you should only donate what you would consider giving to a best friend. You don’t want to give him or her a rusty old lamp do you? (Unless it’s industrial, of course!)

An old favorite of yours, a new favorite of theirs

Many Goodwills or donation centers accept furniture donations and even offer services to pick up donations at your house (perfect for disposing of that heavy chest or ottoman!). Donate it, and you’ll feel great giving it away to someone who will appreciate it like you have.

WHEN TO TOSS

Cracks, chips, stains, and scuffs — yuck.

You don’t need a microscopic eye to see if an item’s got major scuffs or quality issues. If it’s too old or too worn-in to donate, toss it. Here are some specifics on when to toss something:
