There’s no denying that chandeliers are an investment. Which is why if you do have one, you probably want to make sure that it ages well. Dust it and Clean it

Your chandelier might be hanging high overhead, but don’t forget to dust it. Just like you wouldn’t neglect to ever dust your dining room table and expect it to age well, don’t expect anything different of your chandelier. Invest in a step ladder that will boost you to a height that makes it easy to clean your chandelier. (You want to avoid tugging on your chandelier’s hanging chain at all costs.)

For traditional and modern chandeliers, use a microfiber cloth paired with a cleaning solution made with a 1:4 ratio of isopropyl alcohol to distilled water. Traditional crystal chandeliers can be disassembled and washed in the sink, but keep in mind, this is a major time investment. Should you be tempted to go this route — and maintain your sanity — hiring a professional might be best.

Hang it Securely

Your chandelier can’t age well if it’s not around to age. Which is all to say: make sure it’s hung securely. Ensure this by double-checking that your mounting location can support the weight of your chandelier. The electrical box should be properly mounted and snug in the ceiling. Same goes for all of your mounting hardware — cross bar, pipe, screw collar — make sure they’re tight and not going anywhere. You’ll also want to avoid any rotating chains. Opt for a standard chain with a weight limit that suits your fixture.

Get it Re-Wired if Needed

If you purchased a vintage chandelier and it includes antiquated wiring, get it re-wired before hanging it. Yes, it’s a hassle, but it can save you from having to perform re-wiring further down the line after your chandelier is bolted to the ceiling. Realistically, your chandelier should be hanging for ten to thirty years. So if you think your wiring can withstand another five years of use, you want to invest in rewiring it now.
