Mirrors are decorators’ ace in the hole — and for good reason. In addition to offering a place to view one’s reflection, mirrors can make a room look larger and provide natural illumination. In addition, antique mirrors can add decorative architecture to a room. When hung in a hallway or over a fireplace, they can add built-in-like details that instantly elevate a space. If you’ve been considering the idea of adding an antique mirror to your home, but you’re not sure where to start, here are four mainstay styles to consider — plus tips on how to work them!

Sunburst

Sunburst mirrors are a historical style that was adopted and reinterpreted by the Hollywood Regency era. These round mirrors typically feature an ornate, gold spire-style frame that pays homage to a classic sun motif. Because sunburst mirrors tend to be on the smaller side, they’re perfect for waking up a small alcove wall. Alternatively, you’ll often see designers hanging these artful mirrors over a bed.

Trumeau Mirror

A narrow mirror set in a narrow wood frame that’s crowned with a decorative carved top is known as a trumeau mirror. Although they derive their name from the thin section of wall between two doors or two windows, trumeau mirrors are frequently used as mantel mirrors today. (You’ll notice that their narrow form works in perfect sync with the vertical space above a mantel.) For an unexpected twist, an antique trumeau mirror can also be a floor mirror.

Federal Mirror

With its mashup of Neoclassical and colonial influences, there’s something uniquely grand-feeling about a Federal mirror. These round, convex mirrors most often feature substantial gold frames topped with a figural eagle. Try partnering one with a dramatic wallpaper in a powder room, or layering one over a bookshelf. A smaller example can hang above a framed piece of art to procure a mini gallery wall effect.

Louis Philippe Mirror

An icon in every sense of the word, Louis Philippe are large, rectangular mirrors showcasing rounded top corners and square bottom corners. They usually feature a gold or silver leaf finish, making them extremely versatile. You can really never go wrong with an antique Louis Philippe mirror propped on a mantel, but don’t think that’s your only option. These timeless mirrors also make dramatic floor mirrors, and they’re perfect for using as bathroom vanity mirrors.
