How do you choose a rug?

When it comes to selecting a rug, there are two main things to keep in mind: size and design. In regards to size, it is almost always better to opt for a larger rug versus a smaller rug. Design pros often recommend buying a rug that leaves only 12” to 18” of bare space between the edge of the rug and your wall. If that feels overly grand (for your space or your budget), then opt for a rug that is at least large enough to accommodate the front legs of all of your main furniture pieces (i.e. beds, sofas, accent chairs). One exception to this rule are throw rugs. Throw rugs are often used as a no-slip mat in kitchens and bathrooms. Often, these rugs are small (3’x5′) or under and have no furniture placed on them. In terms of design, decide if you want your rug to make the statement in your room, or if you want your furniture to make the statement. This should inform your decision to go with a statement-y rug or something more neutral. For even more info on how to pick the perfect rug, check out our rug guide here!
