How high should you hang a chandelier?

1. Consider where you’re hanging your chandelier so you can determine a hanging height.

  • In a dining room with a standard 8-foot ceiling height, a chandelier should hang about 30-36 inches above the surface of a table. For every additional foot of ceiling height, add on an extra 3 inches of height above the table. (So for a 10-foot ceiling, add 6 inches to be 36-72 inches above).
  • In an entry or foyer with a standard 8-foot ceiling height, a chandelier should hang with at least a 6.5-7 foot clearance from the floor. You also want to keep chandeliers at least 4 feet away from the nearest wall, ideally hung in the center of the room’s focal point.

2. If you’re hanging in a dining room, determine if your chandelier is more elaborate than average (i.e. it occupies more visual space).

  •  If yes, hang your chandelier a couple of inches higher to avoid clashing with the table below.

3. Once your chandelier is up, observe it from different angles to make sure you’re completely satisfied before calling it a day.
