How do you identify vintage Thomasville furniture?

1. Look for stamps.

  • Locations of the stamp will vary, but typically they can be found on the back of a piece (i.e. china cabinets or hutches), under a piece (i.e. dining tables), or in a drawer (i.e. dressers and credenzas).
  • When looking for stamps, keep in mind that Thomasville was founded in 1904 and was originally called the Thomasville Chair Company. As the name might suggest, the company focused primarily on producing chairs in its early years. If you see a stamp that bears the name “Thomasville Chair Company” your item is authentic Thomasville.

  • Check to see if you can find a match for your piece here on Chairish. Be sure to check our Pink Book archives as well.
  • As you browse, keep in mind that Thomasville did not dabble in upholstered goods like accent chairs or sofas that often. Thomasville primarily produced wood furniture, and for many years held a penchant for darker woods like mahogany and walnut. It’s their Mid-Century furniture that is more likely to integrate lighter woods like oak.
  • Thomasville is often thought of as a mid 20th-century brand, but they didn’t produce a large amount of furniture in the archetypal Mid-Century Modern style. More often their furniture harks to French and English revival styles, including French Provincial, Queen Anne, and Chippendale. They also produced a number of Asian-inspired pieces that today tend to fall under the category of Chinoiserie.
