How do you hang pendant lights?

In a kitchen, pendant lights should be hung 30-36 inches over your countertop. If you’d rather leave your countertop out of the equation, simply procure a 72” clearance above the floor. When it comes to hanging more than two pendants, simply abide by a 2 feet spacing rule. Hanging pendant lights somewhere other than a kitchen? Get all of our go-to measurements below.

Dining Room
In a dining room, stringing pendants 30 inches to 32 inches above your dining table is ideal.

Hallway
In a foyer or a hallway, suspend chandeliers or pendants so that their bottom edge is at least 6 inches higher than your door opening. If you’ll be punctuating a hallway with a series of pendant lights, observe a distance of at least 8 feet between fixtures.

Bathroom
National Electric Code mandates that you suspend pendants at least 8 feet above a bathtub’s rim. f modest ceiling heights count you out of going that route, consider stringing pendants over a vanity where rules are laxer. Typically, pendants over a vanity should be hung at least 2 feet from the ceiling.

Bedroom
If you’re hanging a pendant in the middle of a bedroom, ensure there is at least 7 feet of clearance between the bottom of the fixture and the floor. If your ceilings measure in at anything under 8 feet, you may want to consider a more profile-conscious flush mount.
