How do you hang a chandelier?

The first thing you need to do when hanging a chandelier is to turn off the power. If you’re simply swapping out a flush mount or pendant light for a chandelier, make sure the electrical box is in good, working repair (i.e. make sure it’s attached securely to the ceiling and the black and white supply wires are not frayed). Next, assemble the chandelier if needed. Take care to keep any glass components free of fingerprints as this will likely be your last chance to clean your chandelier at ground level. With a standard 8-foot ceiling height, a chandelier should hang about 30-36 inches above the surface of a table. For every additional foot your ceiling height is, add on an extra 3 inches of height above the table. To hang a chandelier with a mount bracket, insert the hook at the end of the chandelier into the electrical box’s mount bracket. Connect the stripped ends of the black and white supply wires with a wire nut. Stuff all wires back into the electrical box and cover with the chandelier’s canopy or decorative ceiling medallion of your choice.
