This week, we are joined by New York City-based designer Hilary Matt. Ever since she was a child, Hilary always had a flair for both fashion and design. She started out her career in the fashion industry, but later realized that interiors were her calling. She has since founded her firm, Hilary Matt Interiors, where she specializes in residential and commercial interiors that embrace color, function, and a timeless aesthetic.
Read on as she shares the most memorable moment of her career, and how she sourced the coolest piece of furniture in her home.
What is the most memorable career moment you’ve had so far?
In 2019, Architectural Digest featured my work on the Flatiron home of my friend Arielle Charnas. Having a space featured with AD was a long-time goal of mine, and being able to achieve that was beyond exciting for me. It was such a meaningful and special time in my career.
What is the most outstanding design element you’ve ever incorporated into a space?
I am about to install a De Sede snake sofa at my client’s apartment in NYC which I am so excited about. I have wanted to use that sofa for years.
What kind of design additions or changes have you recently made to your home?
I recently swapped out my old dining chairs for vintage Guido Faleschini chairs that I had recovered in light blue leather. I am introducing a little more color into my home recently.
What is the coolest vintage piece in your house?
My favorite vintage piece in my house is my Karl Springer-inspired coffee table, which was a decor piece on the floor at Barneys NYC. I had always loved it, so when Barneys was going out of business and liquidating all the fixtures and furnishings, I was the first in line to buy it. It’s a small piece of NYC history in my living room.
Do you collect anything?
I have been collecting Hamptons magazines for years. I think they always look chic stacked or on a bookshelf. Plus they remind me of summer, which I wish existed all year long.
