The terms “flatware” and “silverware” are often used interchangeably, but they do have legitimate differences. Flatware refers to the utensils used for eating, including forks, knives, and spoons. Flatware can be made from a wide variety of materials, including stainless steel and pieces with wood, plastic, resin, or riveted handles. In contrast to the catchall term “flatware,” silverware implies eating utensils made of sterling silver. Solid sterling silver is an alloy consisting of at least 92.5 percent silver by weight and usually 7.5 percent copper.
