What Is The Difference Between A Flat Sheet And A Fitted Sheet?

A flat or top sheet is a large rectangular piece of fabric typically placed on top of a fitted sheet, tucked in at the sides and foot of the bed, and topped by a duvet or comforter. The purpose of a top or fat sheet is to create a barrier between a person’s body and the comforter or duvet. The idea is that a comforter stays most hygienic when protected from the skin’s natural oil and sweat. Because it’s thin, a top sheet can theoretically be washed much more easily than a comforter.

A fitted sheet is similar in shape to a top sheet but has elasticized corners. The elasticized corners make it possible to stretch the fitted sheet over the corners of a mattress and have it stay in place. Fitted sheets are used to keep a bed’s mattress clean and protected, and also to create a more comfortable sleeping area.
