End tables and side tables are types of small tables that are generally used in living rooms or dens. Often, the names are used interchangeably, as both are used to hold decor such as lamps, catchalls, and vases. They’re also used to rest items like drinks or books temporarily.
Traditionally, an end table is positioned at one end of a sofa or arranged between two chairs. While not consistently true today, in decades past, end tables were considered taller than side tables and possess more substantial surface areas.
Again, while not wholly true across the board today, a side table is generally smaller than an end table, designed to be used in locations beyond the end of the sofa or between two chairs. Since their surface area is smaller than an end table, they are less likely to be topped with decor to increase their functionality.
Both side tables and end tables can be crafted from a wide range of materials, such as wood, metal, and acrylic. Both pieces come in a variety of shapes and styles to complement any room.
