Diffusers and candles are both popular ways to set a mood and add fragrance to a room, but they have very different aesthetics and ways of working.
A diffuser is an electronic or battery-operated device that disperses essential oils into the air. It operates by using ultrasonic vibrations to break down the oil’s particles, which are then released into the air as a mist. Diffusers can be sourced in a wide variety of styles, but diffusers made of plastic, stone, or ceramic are popular. The benefits of using a diffuser include everything from improving clarity and focus to clearing airways for easier breathing.
Unlike a diffuser, candles are a more primitive way of adding fragrance to a room, using a wick to burn a scented wax. Typically, the wax is poured into a vessel like a glass or ceramic cup. Today, candles come in a wide assortment of scents, colors, and sizes. Whereas diffusers don’t necessarily generate an ambiance, burning candles can create a warm and cozy mood, and many candle-lovers find the act of burning a candle to be de-stressing and meditative.
When making the call between adding a diffuser or a candle to your space, it ultimately comes down to personal preference and what you’re looking to achieve. If you’re looking for a subtle fragrance, a diffuser may be the best option. However, if you’re seeking a more powerful and enveloping scent, candles may be a better fit. Additionally, diffusers may be a better choice if you’re looking to make a single, one-time investment, as they can be used repeatedly with different essential oils. In contrast, candles can only be used until they’re burned down. That said, they will burn for several hours — sometimes days — and they generally cost less than diffusers.
