1. Add in contrasting Style
If you’re making an MCM dining set or bedroom set the jumping-off point for a room, make sure to factor in some other true-to-the-era styles to provide depth. Ming style and campaign styles were both big in the era and will merge with any MCM piece fairly effortlessly. A Ming or campaign piece is also an excellent opportunity to integrate bold color that can modernize a room.
2. Opt for contemporary art
With its linen matting and chunky gold-leaf-finish frames, authentic Mid-Century art is one of the largest culprits that can make a room look dated. If you have an authentic art piece from the era, consider reframing it in a sleeker frame to modernize it. Alternatively, spring for oversized contemporary photography. Stylistically, photography will merge seamlessly with retro furniture while also promoting a more contemporary look.
3. Incorporate modern pattern
If you have a vintage furniture piece showcasing its original fabric, chances are it will make your room appear dated. The easiest fix? Refresh it in a modern fabric. Avoid any fabric that feels retro in a kitsch way and instead spring for bold geometrics, dainty florals, or global-inspired fabrics.
4. Opt for modern lighting
Much link vintage art, vintage lighting can easily skew outdated. Steadfastly avoid any lighting with yellowed shades or spotted metal, or simply opt for newly-made lighting that echoes vintage design. If you do fall in love with a vintage lamp, try energizing with a new white shade and consider getting it rewired — especially if it has an old lamp cord and you’ll be using it in an area where it’s not concealed.
