A credenza is typically a long, low piece of furniture that is used as a storage unit. Depending on what room it’s in, it can be used for storing dishes, linens, media equipment, or books — really anything! It typically has doors and drawers for concealed storage, while the top surface can be used for serving food or displaying decor.
Unlike a credenza, a buffet is a taller piece of furniture that is used for both storage and food service. It often has a mix of shelves, drawers, and cabinets for storage. Like a credenza, its top can be used as a surface for setting out dishes and serving utensils. To increase their functionality in the dining room, buffets often include serving-centric features such as built-in wine storage, divided silverware drawers, and other details that make it more suitable for use in dining rooms.
Because a credenza is more generic, credenzas can be used just about anywhere in the home, including living rooms, entryways, and dining rooms. In contrast, buffets’ hyper-specific details often make them best fit for the dining room.
