A coffee table is a low table that is usually arranged in front of a sofa. It is primarily used for setting drinks, or displaying books and other items. It can be any shape, but is usually square, round, or rectangular in shape. In contrast, a cocktail table, is a taller table typically used in a more formal settings, such as living rooms, lounges, or restaurants. The idea behind a cocktail table is that it can be pushed up against a sofa, banquette, or accent chair to create a perch for a drink. The main difference between the two is height and surface size; coffee tables are shorter with a large diameter top, while cocktail tables are taller with a small diameter top.
With all of that being said, the word “cocktail table” is sometimes used interchangeably with “coffee table.” Some brands market coffee tables as cocktail tables, with no difference in shape, size, or purpose.
