Setting Up Shop

When cityFoundry’s owner, Sohrab Bakhshi, moved to New York City in 1980, he’d already spent years honing his aesthetic in his native Iran and absorbing the Bauhaus architecture of Israel. Soon he’d amassed his own collection of exceptional pieces, scored locally or in Europe, but was without a place to exhibit them. In 2000, he opened cityFoundry on the strip of Atlantic Avenue known as “antique row” and has been thrilling ever since with his penchant for experimental displays and provocative windows.

A Standout Offering

The store soon garnered a devoted following among designers, especially NYC’s set designers and stylists looking to source beautifully restored design examples of eras past, such as pieces by Mid-Century modern masters or industrial-age finds. Word spread and they were off to the races. To add to the store’s unique assortment, they introduced a bespoke offering under the moniker CF Signature, which includes industrial tables, chairs, and mirrors created from repurposed vintage parts.

A New Era

As their twentieth year in business crept up, Sohrab and his partner Claudia decided it was time to expand. But as a “Brooklyn brand through and through,” they kept it close to home. This fall a second cityFoundry location is making its big debut in Industry City, Brooklyn’s newest culture, shopping and food hub housed in a collection of former shipping warehouses on the waterfront in Sunset Park. Considering their vintage Mid-Century modern seating, one-of-a-kind accessories, and 70s Italian Modern lighting will be on offer alongside shops like Restoration Hardware and Design Within Reach, they are pretty much guaranteed to once again be a total standout in the crowd.
