What’s the Difference Between a China Cabinet and a Hutch?

China cabinets and hutches are both storage pieces used for organizing and displaying dishware, but they have different designs and functions.

A china cabinet is a tall and narrow piece of furniture designed to store fine china and other tableware items. It often has glass doors and comes equipped with several shelves that allow you to display your dishes while keeping them protected and clean. To add to your dishes’ presentation, many china cabinets also come outfitted with built-in lighting.

A hutch is a piece of furniture that is similar to a china cabinet, but it is generally shorter and wider. Rather than shelving concealed behind glass doors, it has open shelves for displaying dishes. Many pieces also include a mix of closed cabinets or drawers for storing additional items. Hutches tend to be more rustic in appearance than china cabinets, which generally tend to be more formal.
