The main difference between a flute and a coupe is the shape between the two glasses. A champagne flute is slim and tall and a champagne coupe is shallow and shaped like a bowl.
A champagne flute is a tall, narrow glass with a long stem and a tapered top. The champagne glass’s unique design is intended to retain sparkling wine’s bubbles and enhance its aroma. In contrast, a coupe, is a shallow, wide-mouthed glass with a short stem that is used for serving champagne and other sparkling wines. Champagne coupes were popular in the U.S. from the 1930s to the 1980s, after which the flute took over as the favored vessel. As opposed to the flute’s design which has a functional origin, the coupe was designed more for aesthetics and presentation purposes.
