A chalice and a goblet are both drinking vessels, but they have distinct differences when it comes to their design and usage. A chalice is a large, ceremonial cup featuring a wide bowl and thick, tapered stem. It is often used in religious ceremonies, and in accordance with this, you’ll often find chalices crafted from precious materials such as gold or bronze. Many feature intricate emblazoning or set jewels as well.
In contrast to the more sacred chalice, a goblet is a general term for a drinking glass with a stem and a base. Goblets can come in a wide array of sizes and designs, and can be made from a variety of materials such as glass or metal. Goblets can be used for water or wine, and it’s common to see pieces marketed as one or other other when shopping for goblets. Goblets can be integrated into any tabletop setting, and are often part of more formal restaurants’ table settings in which they’re used for water.
